Solution

The correct option is D

3.8×1014kg

Step 1: Given data

Average radiation received on the earth surface from the Sun, Pavg=1.4kWm2=1.4×103Wm2

Average distance between Earth-Sun, R=1.5×1011m

Time, t=1day=86400s

Step 2: Finding the total power

Total power emitted by the Sun, P=Pavg×surfaceoftheSun

P=Pavg×4πR2

=1.4×103Wm2×4π1.5×1011m2

=1.4×103×4×227×2.25×1022=39.6×1025W

Step 3: Finding the mass lost

Power is defined as energy transferred per unit time, i.e., P=EtE=Pt…...(1)

Energy equivalence relation is given by E=mc2…..….(2)

where E is the energy, m is the mass and c is the velocity of light, =3×108ms2

Comparing equations (1) and (2), mc2=Pt

m=Ptc2=39.6×1025W×86400s3×108ms22

=39.6×1025×864009×1016

Thus the mass lost by the Sun per day is m=3801.6×1011=3.8×1014kg

Hence, the mass lost by the Sun per day is 3.8×1014kg

Thus option D is correct.
