The use of genetically modified food crops is often criticised because
Genetically modified crops are the plants which have been genetically modified to carry the genes of other organisms. This is done to provide the crop with advantageous properties such as more nutritional value, good yield, pest resistance, etc.
Food derived from genetically modified crops is called GM food. As the technology used in developing GM foods is relatively new, not much is known about their long term effects on human beings. This is one of the major reasons due to which most people avoid the consumption of GM foods.
GM foods may, sometimes, be toxic and can cause allergies. This poses a risk to human health if these crops are commercialised and consumed by the mass population. Thus, health and food safety concerns have been raised to ensure the safety of consumption of GM Foods.
Tissue culture is a modern plant breeding technique which is used to grow plant parts in artificial culture medium, under aseptic condition. Such techniques allows rapid vegetative multiplication of genetically modified crops. Thus a large number of progenies can be obtained from a genetically modified crop in a short time period. Therefore large scale production of these crops is possible.
