Question

The vapours of Hg absorb some electrons accelerated by a potential difference of 4.5 volt, as a result of which light is emitted. If the full energy of a single incident electron is supposed to be converted into light emitted by single Hg atom, then the wave number(1/λ) of the light is:

Solution

The correct option is A 3.63×106metre1
Energy of an accelerated electron =qV, where q is charge of electron and V is the potential difference.
qV=1.602×1019×4.5=7.209×1019J
The electron energy is completely converted to light.
hcλ=7.209×1019
6.626×1034×3.0×108λ=7.209×1019
Wave number ¯v=(1/λ)=3.63×106 metre1.
