Question

The vapours of Hg absorb some electrons accelerated by a potential difference of 9.0 eV, as a result of which, light is emitted. If the 25% of energy of a single incident electron is supposed to be converted into light emitted by a single Hg atom, find the wave number 1λ of the light.

Solution

The correct option is B 1.82×106 m1
Energy of an accelerated electron
=1.6×1019×9.0=14.4×1019 J

This energy is 25% converted into light.
We know that,
Energy converted into light
= 14.4×1019× 25100 J
=3.6×1019 J

hcλ=3.6×1019
6.6×1034×3×108λ=3.6×1019
1λ=3.6×10196.6×1034×3×108
1λ=¯ν=1.82×106 m1
