Question

The vertices of a figure are given. Find the coordinates of the image after the transformations given.

A(-5,3),B(-2,3),C(-2,1),D(-5,1)

Reflect in the y-axis. Then, dilate using a scale factor of 2.

Solution

Step 1: Find the coordinates of image after reflection.

Given, A(-5,3),B(-2,3),C(-2,1),D(-5,1)

As we know that reflection about y-axis, then coordinates changes as,

P(x,y)=P'(-x,y)

Using the above criteria of reflection about y-axis.

A(-5,3)=A'(5,3)B(-2,3)=B'(2,3)C(-2,1)=C'(2,1)D(-5,1)=D'(5,1)

Step 2: Find the coordinates of image after dilation.

From the above step, coordinate of the image are A'(5,3),B'(2,3),C'(2,1),D'(5,1)

Since, we know that in dilation we just multiply each x and y coordinate by the given scale factor.

P(x,y)=P'(x×a,y×a)

Using the above criteria of dilation using a scale factor of 2.

A'(5,3)=A''(5×2,3×2)=A''(10,6)B'(2,3)=B''(2×2,3×2)=B''(4,6)C'(2,1)=C''(2×2,1×2)=C''(4,2)D'(5,1)=D''(5×2,1×2)=D''(10,2)

Step 3: Final answer.

Hence, the coordinates of image after reflection are A'(5,3),B'(2,3),C'(2,1),D'(5,1) and after dilation are A''(10,6),B''(4,6),C''(4,2),D''(10,2).
