Question

The vertices of a triangle are A(2,5),B(1,2) and C(3,1). Find the coordinates of the image after the transformations given. Dilate with respect to the origin using a scale factor of 2. Then, translation 2 units left and 1 unit up.

Solution

Step 1:Find the coordinates of image after dilation.

Given, coordinates are A(2,5),B(1,2) and C(3,1) with scale factor of 2.

Since, we know dilation of scale k then the coordinate changes as:

A(x,y)=A'(x×k,y×k)

Using the above criteria of dilating the figure by scale factor of 2.

A(2,5)=A'(2×2,5×2)=A'(4,10)B(1,2)=B'(1×2,2×2)=B'(2,4)C(3,1)=C'(3×2,1×2)=C'(6,2)

Step 2: Find the coordinates of image after translation.

Coordinates obtained in above step are A'(4,10),B'(2,4),C'(6,2).

Now, using the criteria of translation by parameters, a=-2,b=1

.A'(4,10)=A''(4-2,10+1)=A''(2,11)B'(2,4)=B''(2-2,4+1)=B''(0,5)C'(6,2)=C''(6-2,2+1)=C''(4,3)

Step 3: Final answer.

Hence, the coordinates of final image are A''(2,11),B''(0,5),C''(4,3)
