Question

The volume of 50g of a substance is 20 cm3. If the density of water is 1g cm3, will the substance float or sink in water?

Open in App
Solution

Given, mass of substance, m=50g;
volume, V=20cm3; density, ρ=?

The density of substance given is
d=mV=50g20cm3=2.5gcm3
Hence the density of the substance is greater than the density of water. Hence the weight acting downwards Vdg is greater than the buoyant force acting upwards Vρwaterg.
Hence the substance will sink in water.
