Question

The weight of any person on the moon is about 1/6 times that on the earth. He can lift a mass of 15 kg on the earth. What will be the maximum mass, which can be lifted by the same force applied by the person on the moon?

Open in App
Solution

Weight=mass×g
Since mass of person is constant so the reduction in weight on moon will be due to reduction in value of g.
Weight is directly proportional to g.
So weight reduced to 1/6 times mean that g reduced to 1/6 times.
Force required is nothing but weight of object being lifted.
Since the applied force will be same on moon it means weight is going to be same.That is product of m and g is going to be same.So when g reduces to 1/6 times , m change oppositely, that is , it becomes 6 times to keep the product same.
So new mass that can be lifted=15×6=90kg
