Question

There are two large parallel metallic plates P1 and P2 , carrying surface densities σ1 and σ2(σ1>σ2) respectively, placed at a distance d apart in vaccum. Determine the work done by the electric field in moving a point-charge q from P1 to P2 along a line of length a(a<d) making an angle of π/4 with the normal to the plate.

Solution

Let the electric fields due to plates P1 and P2 are E1 and E2.

The net electric field between the plates is given as,

E=E1E2

=σ1ε0σ2ε0

The force on the charge due to the electric field is given as,

F=qE

=q(σ1σ2)ε0

The work done by the electric field is given as,

W=F×d×cosθ

W=q(σ1σ2)ε0×d×cos(π4)

W=qd(σ1σ2)ε02

Thus, the work done by the electric field is W=qd(σ1σ2)ε02.
