Question

There are two resistances of 3Ω and 5Ω. By connecting these resistances in (i) series and (ii) parallel to a cell, which resistance will be heated more?

Open in App
Solution

(i)Heat produced is proportional to Hα i2Rt,
In series, equal current will flow through both resistors.hence resistor having more resistance will be heated more.
In series 5Ω resistor will be heated more.
(ii)Also heat produced is proportional to Hα V2Rt,
In parallel, potential difference V across both resistors is same.hence resistance having less resistance will be heated more.
In parallel 3Ω resistor will be heated more
