Question

There exists a uniform electric field E=4×105Vm1 directed along negative x-axis. A charge of is placed 200μC at the origin, and a charge +200μC of is placed at (3m,0). Find the electrostatic potential energy of the dipole system.

Solution

Step 1, Given data

Electric field,E=4×105Vm1

Charges = 200μCand+200μC

Step 2, Finding the electrostatic potential energy

We know,

The potential energy of the dipole is given by ,pEcosθ
Here, p=q×d=200×106×3=6×104

And, E=4×105Vm1

Putting all the values in the equation

U=pEcosθ=6×104×4×105cos180o=240J
Hence the potential energy of the system is 240 J
