Here, the number of days is inversely related to the number of soldiers. So as the days increases, the number of soldiers will decrease.
$\therefore 40:35::1000:x$
$\Rightarrow \frac{40}{35}=\frac{1000}{x}$
Cross-multiplying, we get
$\Rightarrow 40\times x=1000\times 35$
$\Rightarrow x=\frac{1000\times 35}{40}=875$

Hence, the number of soldiers left = 1000 - 875 = 125
