Question

Thermite welding is carried out for iron by taking aluminium. Which properties of aluminium are exploited for the above purpose?

Open in App
Solution

Aluminium is chosen as metal for thermite welding since it has strong affinity towards oxygen and its oxide. Al2O3 is a highly exothermic compound. A common thermite contains ferric oxide and aluminium in 3:1 ratio by mass. Hence, it is used in thermite welding of broken iron parts.
Since aluminium has strong affinity towards oxygen and its oxide reducing property of aluminium is exploited for the above purpose.
