Solution

A food chain refers to the order of events in an ecosystem, where one living organism eats another organism, and later that organism is consumed by another larger organism.

  1. Living organisms that cannot make their own food but consume either plants or other animals, are called consumers or heterotrophs.
  2. All living organisms need energy for their survival.
  3. The ultimate source of energy on earth is solar energy.
  4. Only green plants have the ability to use this solar energy.
  5. Green plants make their own food in the presence of sunlight using water, minerals and carbon dioxide.
  6. Thus, consumers depend on producers in a food chain.
