Rising Japanese economic power in the wake of the Great Depression

This political cartoon shows how Japan invaded Manchuria using Korea as a bridge. The year of the great economic depression intensified economic nationalism. Due to the problem of unemployment and business stagnation, the government resorted to high tariffs to preserve the home market for consumption of their products. This resulted in an expansionist policy leading to the conquest of neighboring territories as a means of solving economic problems.
