Question

This method is used to separate mixture whose components have different densities.

Solution

Different separation techniques present depending upon the property of the substances to be separated and the simpler processes involved:

Separating funnel

  • This method used to separate two or more immiscible liquids, i.e liquids which are not miscible with each other.
  • When this mixture of liquids taken in a separating funnel, they form different layer dependig on the density.
  • The liquid with lower denstiy will form upper layer and liquid with higher density will form lower layer.
  • The lower layer can be collected by opening the stopper of the separating funnel and upper layer remain within the funnel.
  • The mixture of oil and water can be separated by this process, where the oil form upper layer and water will form the lower layer.

Centrifugation

  • This method also separate the components depending on the difference in density.
  • The mixture taken in centrifuging tube when allowed to rotate on a centrifugal machine, the heavier particles forced to move to the bottom, so the dispersed particles can be separated.
  • We can separate cream from milk using this process, (milk is a colloid where fat globules are dispersed in the water which is the dispersion medium).

Thus to separate components having different densities, we can use a separating funnel and centrifugation technique.
