Question

Three reactions involving H2PO4 are given below:
(i) H3PO4+H2OH3O++H2PO4
(ii) H2PO4+H2OHPO24+H3O+
(iii) H2PO4+OHH3PO4+O2

Solution

ii) H2PO4+H2OHPO42+H3O+
In second reaction H2PO4 acts as
an acid because acid gives H+ in
aqueous medium.
H2PO4(aq)+H2O(l)H3O++HPO42(aq)
i) H3PO4+H2OH3O++H2PO4
H2PO4 is a con jugged base of H3PO4
iii) H2PO4+OHH3PO4+O2
In this reaction H2PO4 acts as a
conjugate base which goined one hydrogen
and made it parent acid.
