Question

Three rods A, B and C, having identical shape and size, are hinged together at ends to form an equilateral triangle. Rods A and B are made of same material having coefficient of linear thermal expansion a while that of material of rod C is α2. Solution

The correct option is A
When the system is heated, the rods expand and the triangle does not remain equilateral. Let lengths of rods A, B and C be l1, l2 and l3 respectively. Then

cosθ=l21+l22l232l1l2or 2l1l2cosθ=l21+l22l23(1)Differentiating eq.(1), we get2l1cosθdl2+2l2cosθdl12l1l2sinθdθ=2l1dl1+2l2dl22l3dl3(2)
Let the temperature of the system be increased by ΔT. Then
dl1=l1α1ΔTdl2=l2α1ΔT(3)anddl3=l3α2ΔTIn case of equilateral triangle l1=l2=l3=l(say) and θ=60from eqn.(2) and (3), we get2l2cos60α1ΔT+2l2cos60α1ΔTα12ΔT+α12ΔT32dθ=α1ΔT+α1ΔTα2ΔTα1ΔT32dθ=2α1ΔTα2ΔT(α2α1)ΔT=32dθΔT=3dθ2(α2α1)
