Water moves from a region or solution of high water potential to a region or solution of low water potential. Thus, water always moves from a less concentrated to a more concentrated solution. If a cell is placed in a highly concentrated salt solution, water will move out from the cell into the surrounding solution, along the water potential gradient. This process is called as exosmosis and will lead to plasmolysed or shrunk protoplasm.
