Tourism industries plays an important role in economic and cultural development of India.

So far as economic development is concerened,the arrival of foreign tourists in the country led to an increase of 23.5 percent during the year 2004 as against year 2003, thus contributing Rs. 21,828 crores of foreign exchange.This shows an upward trend towards increase of foreign tourism and, hence, more foreign exchange earning for the country.Tourism also plays a major role in employment generation. More than 15 million people are directly engaged in the tourism industry .

Tourism has also led to the cultural development of India. India's rich cultural heritage has attracted many foreign tourists. The beauty and rich cultural heritage of our nation has promoted international understanding..Foreign tourists visit India for heritage tourism, cultural tourism, ecotourism, adventure tourism, medical tourism and business tourism. The tourists come to India and visit different places forming a platform for exchange of cultural understanding.
