Solution

The correct option is C Absorption of water by roots
Transpiration is the loss of water in vapour form from the leaves through minute pores called stomata. When transpiration occurs, water evaporates from the intercellular spaces of the leaves to the outer atmosphere through stomata. Due to water loss, the osmotic pressure of leaf cells increases. As a result, the water potential of the cells is decreased and water from the xylem of leaf veins move into leaf cells. The xylem vessel, in turn, draw water from the xylem of the main stem. The main stem draws water from the root cortical cells. This causes the root hair cells to absorb water from the soil and in this way, a pull is created which is called transpirational pull.
Hence, transpiration helps in the absorption of water by the roots.
So, the correct answer is 'Absorption of water by roots'.
