Question

Two balls of masses 2 kg and 4 kg are moved towards each other with velocities 4m/s and 2m/s, respectively, on a frictionless surface. After colliding, the 2 kg ball returns back with velocity 2m/s. Then find

b) coefficient of deformation e
c) impulse of deformation Jd

Solution

a) By momentum conservation,
2(4)4(2)=2(2)+4(ν2)
ν2=1m/s.
b) e=VelocityofseparationVelocityofapproach=192)4(2)=36=0.5
c) At the maximum deformed state, by conservation of momentum, common velocity is ν=0
JD=m2(νu2)=4[(0(2)]=8Ns
d) Potential energy at the maximum deformed state,
U= loss in kinetic energy during defirmation
or U=(12m1u21+12m2u22)12(m1+m2)ν2
=(122(4)2+124(2)2)12(2+4)(0)2=24J
e) JR=m2(ν2ν)=4(10)=4Ns
also JR=eJD=0.5×8=4Ns
