Solution

Two masses m and m are kept in a vertical line.

m=10 kg m= 30 kg

y = 7cm y = ?

The centre of mass is raised by 1 cm.

Centre of mass = (my+my) / (m+m)

1 = (10x7+30y) / (10+30)

1 = (70+30y) / 40

40 = 70+30y

30y = -30

y = -1

So , m = 30 kg body should be displaced 1 cm downward so , as to raise the centre of mass through 1 cm.
