Question

Two bodies of same mass are placed at height h and 2h above ground. Compare their gravitational potential energy. [2 marks]

Solution

We know that potential energy,
P.E. = mgh

We have given, h1 = h, h2 = 2h and mass is same for both the bodies.
Therefore from the above relation, we get,
P.E.1 = mgh
P.E.2 = 2mgh
[1 mark]

Hence, the potential energy of the body kept at height 2h is twice of the potential energy of the body kept at height h above the ground.
