Question

Two cars c1, and c2 moving in the same direction on a straight single lane road with velocities v1=12ms1 and v2=10ms1, respectively. When the separation between the two was d = 200 m, c2 started accelerating to avoid collision. What is the minimum acceleration of car c2 so that they do not collide?

Solution

V1=12m/sV2=10m/s

Distance between them d=200m

Acceleration of c2=?

To avoid collision c2 should retard relative velocity of c1 with respect to

c2=μ=V1V2=1210=12m/s

Relative velocity becomes zero for cars to avoid collision so, final velocity V=0 (both have same velocity)

Using, V2=μ2+2as0=(V1V2)2+2a×200a=(2)22×200a=42×200a=0.01m/s2

ve sign shows retardation.
