Solution

Step 1: Given data

Two metallic spheres having raddii R1 and R2(R1>R2) containing charge Q1 and Q2 respectively.

Step 2: Calculating potential due to Q1

Potential due to a charged sphere of radius R1 containing charge Q1 at a distance r is given by

V1=14πε0Q1R1........(1)

As r remains inside the sphere, the potential will be constant.

Step 3: Calculating potential due to Q2

Now the potential due to a charged sphere of radius R2 containing a charge Q2,at a distance r is given by

V2=14πε0Q2r.........(2)

As r is outside the sphere.

Step 4: Calculating total potential

Now the total potential at a distance r between R1 and R2can be given by,

Vr=V1+V2=14πε0Q1R1+14πε0Q2r=14πε0(Q1R1+Q2r)

Hence, the potential at a distance R between R1 and R2 is vr=14πε0(Q1R1+Q2r).
