Question

Two equal charges placed in air and separated by a distance of 2 m repel each other with a force of 104kgf. Calculate the magnitude of either of the charges.

Open in App
Solution

Let each charge be q.
Using Coulomb's Law,
F=14πε0q2r2
Here, r=2m
F=104×9.8N
=104×10N
q2=F×4πε0×r2
=104×10×19×109×(2)2
=10129×(2)2

So, q=23×106
=0.66μC
Each charge is 0.66μC
