Question

Two glass bulbs A and B at same temperature are connected by a very small tube having a stop cork. Bulb A has a volume of 100cm3 and contained the gas while bulb B was empty. On opening the stop cork, the pressure fell down to 20%. What is the volume of the bulb B?

Solution

Given, initial volume=100cm3 = VA
initial Pressure = P = P1
final pressure = 20100P = 0.2P = P2
Boyle's law, P1VA=P2V2(P)(100cm3)=(0.2P)V2V2=500cm3total volume =VA+VB
So, the volume of the bulb B = 500 - 100 = 400 cm3
