Question

Two identical balls A and B are approaching each other with velocity 3ms-1and7ms-1respectively and undergo an elastic collision. Determine the velocities of two balls after the collision.

Solution

Step 1:

Here m1=m2=m,u1=3ms-1,u2=7ms-1.
Velocities after the collision are given by
v1=m1-m2m1+m2u1+2m2u2m1+m2
v1=m-mm+mu1+2mu2m+m
v1=0+u2v1=u2=-7ms-1

Step 2:
v2=m2-m1m1+m2u2+2m1u1m1+m2v2=m-mm+mu2+2mu1m+mv2=0+u1v2=u1=3ms-1

Thus, bodies will interchange their velocities after the collision.
