Question

Two identical speakers emit sound waves of frequency of 103 Hz uniformly in all directions. The audio output of each speaker is 9π/10 mW. A point 'P' is at a distance 3 m from the speaker S1 and 5m from speaker S2. Resultant intensity at P is Ig. Match the items in Column I with the items in Column II:

Solution

Intensity at a distance r from a source of power output P is given by
I=P4πr2
I1=0.9πmW4π(3)2=140mW=25μW/m2
I1=9πmW40π(5)2=91000mW=9μW/m2
For incoherent source,
IR=I1+I2+2I1I2=(25+9)=34μW/m2
For coherent source, Δ=0
IR=I1+I2+2I1I2
(I1+I2)2=(5+3)2=64μW/m2
For δ=±π,IR=(I1I2)2
=(53)2=4μW/m2
If the speaker S2 is switched off, IR=I1=25μW/m2
