Let equation of wave 1 be given by

x1=Asin(kxωt)

Equation of wave 2 is given by

x2=Asin(kxωt+π2)

From the principle of superposition,
x=x1+x2

x=Asin(kxωt)+Asin(kxωt+π2)

Using, sinC+sinD=2sin(C+D2)cos(CD2)

x=2Acos(π4)sin(kxωt+π4)

Amplitude of the resultant wave,
Ar=2Acos(π4)

Ar=2A×12=1.41A

Hence, option (a) is the correct answer.
