Question

Two magnets of magnetic moments M1 and M2 (M1 > M2) are placed one by one on a deflection magnetometer at a distance d from the centre of the compass. The deflections produced are 60o and 30o . M1 is placed at a distance 10cm from the compass. To get null deflection, M2 to be placed at a distance of (31/3=1.5)

Solution

The correct option is A 6.6cm
For null deflection,
M1M2=d31d32 ........(1)
But,
M1d31=4πBH(tan30)μ0 and M2d32=4πBH(tan60)μ0

comparing above equations, we get
d31d32=M1(tan60)M2(tan30)
d32d13=tan30tan60 ........from(1)
d32=(tan30tan60)d31
d32=(0.57731.732)(10)3
d32=(0.3)(10)3
d2=0.66×10=6.6cm
