Question

Two objects of masses 100g and 200g are moving along the line and direction with velocities of 2m s-1 and 1m s-1 respectively ,They collide and after the collosion, the first object moves at a velocity of 1.67 m s-1. Determine the velocity of the secong object

Open in App
Solution

Here m =100g = 0.1kg

m' = 200g = 0.2kg

u = 2m/s and u' = 1m/s

v = 1.67m/s

According to the law of conservation of momentum:

Total momentum before collision = Total momentum after collision

mu + m'u' = mv + m'v'

0.1x2 + 0.2x1 = 0.1x1.67 + 0.2xv'

0.2+0.2=0.167+0.2v'

thus, we get

v'=1.165 m/s
