Question

Two particles A and B of masses 10 kg and 38 kg respectively are moving along the same straight line with velocities 15 m/s and 3 m/s respectively in the same direction. After elastic collision the velocities of A and B are vA and vB in the direction of initial motion. Then:

Solution

The correct option is A
vA=4,vB=8
In elastic collision the coefficient of restitution e=1
In the given problem, the velocity of A can be calculated as
vA=(m1m2m1+m2)u1+2m2u2m1+m2
Here, m1=10 kg,m2=38 kg,u1=15 m/s,u2=3 m/s
=(103810+38)15+2×30×310+38=4 m/s
And the velocity of B can be calculated as
vB=(m2m1m1+m2)u2+2m1u1m1+m2
=(381010+38)3+2×10×1510+38=8 m/s

Final answer: (b)
