Solution

The correct option is C

5 minutes

Suppose the faster pipe takes x minutes to fill the cistern. Therefore, the slower pipe will take (x+3) minutes to fill the cistern.

Portion of the cistern filled by the faster pipe in one minute =1x

Portion of the cistern filled by the slower pipe in one minute =1x+3

It is given that the cistern is filled in 4013 minutes

Portion of the cistern filled in minute by both pipes together =1340

1x+1x+3=1340

x+3+xx(x+3)=1340

40(2x+3)=13x(x+3)

80x+120=13x2+39x

13x241x120=0

13x265x+24x120

13x(x5)+24(x5)=0

(x5)(13x+24)=0

x5=0 or, 13x+24=0

x=5 or, x=2413x=5 [as x>0]

Hence, the faster pipe fills the cistern in 5 minutes and the slower pipe takes 8 minutes to fill the cistern.
