Question

Two plates are connected by fillet welds of size 8mm and subjected to a tensile force of 350kN. The thickness of each plate is 12mm. The yield stress and ultimate stress of steel are 250MPa and 410MPa respectively. As per IS 800 : 2007, the length (l) required to transmit the load is ____mm. (The welding is done at site).
  1. 145

Solution

The correct option is A 145
Given, size of weld, s=8mm;
Effective throat thickness (tt)=(0.7×5)=(0.7×0.8)=5.6mm
fu=410MPa,fy=250MPa,γmw=1.5 (at site)
Strength of weld per mm length =(fu3)ttγmw
=(4103)5.6×81.5
=883.73N/mm
Length of weld required to transmit 350kN load
2l+100=350×103883.73
2l+100=396
l=148mm
