Question

Two small identical ball P and Q, each of mass 0.866 g, carry identical charges and are suspended by two threads of equal length 50 cm each from the same point. At equilibrium, they are separated by a distance of 50 cm. Find the charge on each ball (in the nearest integer in nC).
Take g=10 m/s2 and tan60=1.7.

Solution

FBD of charged balls in equilibrium is shown in the figure.
Let us consider a ball, say P.
There are three forces acting on it:
(i) Tension (T) in the thread
(ii) Force (mg) of gravity
(iii) Electric force (F)

Considering the equilibrium,
Tsin60=mg, and
Tcos60=F=kq2r2

So, tan60=mgr2kq2
q=mgr2ktan60
q=0.866×103×10×(0.5)29×109×1.7
q=3.76×107=376 nC
