Question

Two spheres of masses 3 kg and 2 kg collide directly. Their relative velocity before collision is 15 m/s and after collision is 5 m/s. The total loss of k.E. in joules due to collision is _____.

Solution

Given : m1=3 kg m2=2 kg urel=15 m/s vrel=5 m/s
So, e=vrelurel=515=13
Loss in kinetic energy ΔK.E=12(m1m2m1+m2)(1e2)(urel)2
Or ΔK.E=12(3×23+2)(1132)(15)2=120 J
