Question

Two uniform metal rods of length l1 and l2 and the linear coefficients of expansion α1 and α2 respectively are connected to form a single rod of length l1+l2. When the temperature of the combined rod is raised by toC, the length of each rod increases by the same amount. Then α2α1+α2 is :

Solution

The correct option is A l1l1+l2
We know, dl=lαdt, where, dl= change in length, l= original length and dt= change in temperature
Since change in temperature is the same,
we have, l1α1=l2α2
Or α1α2=l2l1
Adding 1 to both sides, we get, α1+α2α2=l1+l2l1
Or, α2α1+α2=l1l1+l2
