Question

two vessel of capacity 1.5 litre and 2 litre contain hydrogen gas and oxygen gas respectively under a pressure of 750mm and 100mm. The gases are mixed together in a 5 litre vessel. What will be the final pressure mixture?

Solution

Let us assume that both vessels were at same temperature T and they were mixed at this same temperature T.
Let us assume that moles of hydrogen and oxygen gas are n1 and n2 .

n1=750×1.5RT and n2=100×2RT
and finally when mixed in a 5L vessel, let new pressure be P.

P×5=(n1+n2)RT
On solving, P = 275 mm.
