Solution
The correct option is A Glycolysis and HMP
Glycolysis forms the first step of aerobic respiration in which glucose is broken down anaerobically to form two molecules of pyruvic acid. It is a 10 step process which takes place in the cytoplasm of cells.
HMP or Hexose Monophosphate Shunt is a metabolic pathway parallel to glycolysis. It also takes place in the cytoplasm and is more active in the liver, mammary glands and adrenal cortex of humans. The process generates NADPH, pentoses, and ribose-5-phosphate. Ribose-5-phosphate acts as a precursor for the synthesis of nucleotides. The process starts with glucose -6- phosphate instead of glucose and is anabolic rather than catabolic as in case of glycolysis.
Since these two processes run parallel to each other, they are considered as two types of aerobic respiration.
