The correct option is B closer to 2 than 4
Solution:- (B) closer to 2 than 4
As we know that,
pH=log[H+]
For the solution of pH2-
[H+]=102
For the solution of pH4-
[H+]=104
As given that equal volume of solutions are mixed.
Let the volume of both the solutions mixed be V for each.
Final volume of solution after mixing (Vf)=V+V=2V
Using formula-
M1V1+M2V2=MfVf
102V+104V=Mf×2V
Mf=102+1042
Mf=0.505×102M
pH of the mixing solution will be-
pHf=log0.505×102
pHf=(log0.505+log102)
pHf=0.297+2=1.703
Hence the pH of the solution after mixing will be closer to 2.
