First of all lets find the prime factors of both $18 a n d 24$

Prime factors of $18$ are $2 \times 3 \times 3$ Prime factors of $24$ are $2 \times 2 \times 2 \times 3$
Now to find the HCF we need to common factors of both the numbers
which are $2 a n d 3$ (both are common one time only)
so $H C F$ of $18 a n d 24$ is $= 2 \times 3 = 6$
