Three barrier methods exclusively used by females are (i) diaphragms, (ii) Cervical caps and (iii) vaults. The main principle behind using the barrier method is to physically prevent the sperms from meeting the oocytes. These are all cup-shaped rubber caps that block/cover the entrance of the uterus, which eventually blocks the entrance of the sperms, hence conception is prevented.
During coitus, these barriers are used at the entrance of the uterus to cover the cervix, not into the uterus.
Spermicidal agents contain spermicides that kill the sperms. These come in different forms like foams, jellies foams, etc. Spermicides are used along with barriers to increase the contraceptive efficiency of the barrier.
