Question

Velocity versus time graph of a ball of mass 50g rolling on a concrete floor is shown in figure .Calculate the acceleration and frictional force of the floor on the ball.

Open in App
Solution

Step-1:Given data

Mass of ball =M=50gm=0.050kg

The initial velocity of ball=U=80ms

The final velocity of ball= V=0ms

Time required=t=8ms

Acceleration of the ball=a=?

Frictional force=F=?

Step-2: Formula

Acceleration=a=V-Ut

Frictional force = F = m×a

Step-3: Calculation

1. Calculate the acceleration

Acceleration=a=V-Ut=0-808=-10ms2…………………………….(-veacceleration shows retardation)

2. Calculate Frictional Force

Frictional force = F = m×a=0.05×(-10)=-0.5N…………………(-ve sign shows this force acts in the opposite direction of motion)

Hence, the Acceleration of the ball is 10ms2 and the frictional force that acts on the ball is 0.5N
