Let the no of days he is absent be $x$ and he worked for $21days$

So, According to question,

$$\begin{gathered} 500\times 21-x\times 100=9600 \\ \Rightarrow 10500-100x=9600 \\ \Rightarrow 100x=10500-9600 \\ \Rightarrow 100x=900 \\ \Rightarrow x=\frac{900}{100} \\ \Rightarrow x=9 \end{gathered}$$

Hence, he remained absent for $9days$
