Viruses can undergo mutation. What does this signify?

Viruses contain genetic material enclosed in a protein coat, many a times when they replicate in the host cell the genetic material using host machinery their genetic material is susceptible to mutation. This may result in the modification of viral genetic material, leading to their evolution in to a new pathogenetic entity.
