Society was divided into four classes based on the work they did. This division was called Varna. The shoemaker must have been a Shudra. The priest was a Brahmin and had access to the religious scriptures. The king was a warrior and was a Kshatriya. Vaishyas were the businessmen and traders. This system of classification based on occupation from back then is now known to us as the caste system.
