In the theory of chemical evolution, it is believed that molecular oxygen which were formed was combined with carbon and hydrogen atoms to form their oxides leaving no free oxygen. Thus, the primitive atmosphere was reducing atmosphere (without free oxygen) unlike the present oxidising atmosphere (with free oxygen).
