Question

Washing soda (Na2CO3.10H2O) is widely used in softening of hard water. If 1L of hard water requires 0.0143 g of washing soda, what is hardness of water in terms of ppm of CaCO3?

Solution

Molecular weight of washing soda=286 g/mol
Molecular weight of CaCO3=100 g/mol
CaSO4+Na2CO3CaCO3+Na2SO4
0.0143 g of Na2CO3.10H2O=0.0143×103286/2=0.1mEq
0.1mEq of Na2CO3=0.12 mmol of CaCO3 in 1L
=0.05×103×100g in 103 mL
=0.005g in 103mL=5ppm of CaCO3
